Tips for Packing and Organizing your Storage Unit

Whether you are moving from state to state or renovating your home, there might be several reasons for you to require either long term or short term storage services so that you can keep your belongings safe, sound and in great condition. However, just dumping them in storage facility won't do it, to protect your belongings, it is important you pack them safely and efficiently before storing them. Now, packing for storage is slightly different from normal moving packing, since in this case, your belongings are likely to be packed for a much longer time period than when you are moving.  So, here are few practical packing tips to consider when packing for storage.

To begin with, get all the right packing materials. You would probably need clean and hefty cardboard boxes to store your items, use plastic containers instead of plastic bags as they increase the potential for mold, good quality cushioning and padding  materials, packing or sealing tape, and furniture blankets.

Before packing your items, ensure that they are clean and dry. While packing, don't over stuff your boxes and try to keep each box at an absolute maximum of 50 pounds. On the other hand, don't leave your boxes half empty since they may collapse once stacked. One packed, seal each box tightly to protect against dust, dirt, and pests and label them using a permanent and waterproof marker. Don't forget to mark fragile boxes “FRAGILE” and include any specific handling instructions for them on the box. Try to pack electronic devices in their original boxes, and if that is not possible, try to use a box which is similar in size and shape and label it properly. Once done, make a detailed inventory of everything you are storing in the storage unit.
Once finishing with the packing, now it's time to store your belongings in the storage unit. The best way to use your storage unit with optimized space and accessibility is by installing shelves in your storage unit which will ensure easy access to everything you are storing. However, this may be possible all the time, especially if you are using the storing facility for a short term. So, to ensure optimum space and accessibility of the storage unit, the following tips might be helpful.

Placing larger boxes against the wall and smaller boxes in the front will provide you clear view of the entire unit. Also, make sure to place boxes with heavy items on the bottom with lighter on top and don’t stack anything on top of fragile items. You can store large furniture pieces vertically and stack chairs to save space as well. For air circulation, allow some space between items and the wall. If there are any items or boxes which you may frequently need to access then place them towards the front.
